GTA 5 Release Date Revealed?

Recently Rockstar Games made a comment that they would be providing us with some new insight into Grand Theft Auto 5 soon.  We have yet to hear any news from the game developer, but we do have some other potential news.  Recently Zavvi, an online retailer in the UK listed Grand Theft Auto 5 along with the release date November 23rd.

While this would seem like pretty optimistic news, there’s no way to be sure that the release date is accurate since the same retailer previously had the game posted for release in July of this year.  Max Payne 3 is coming out in May, which is one good reason for Rockstar to hold off on the GTA release until later in the year.  November 23rd is right around when many people begin their holiday shopping, so that would be a sensible time to release the game.  It’s also a Friday, which is a common big game release day in the UK.

November is the same month that some analysts think the next Call of Duty game will be released.  PlayStation SVP Guy Longworth’s comment that COD will come to the PS Vita in autumn of this year certainly seems to coincide with that.  Since Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto are very different games, though, they won’t necessarily compete directly for buyers, and as such a side-by-side release wouldn’t necessarily impact sales figures positively or negatively for either game.

Finally, we can also look at Take-Two’s prediction that they will have a record fiscal year in 2013.  Since Take-Two’s fiscal year 2013 actually starts in September of 2012, a November release for Grand Theft Auto 5 would fall within the 2013 fiscal year.  This is yet one more confirmation that the November 23rd date listed by Zavvi makes sense.

GTA 5 Joke Article Elicits Vehement Reactions

Recently the site RobotGeek.uk ran an article titled “Not Necessarily News:  Grand Theft Auto V producer says game will have ‘less action and excitement, more inane minigames.’”  While the title blatantly states that the article is not news, the content still received surprisingly vehement reactions from internet trolls and upset fans who are unable to comprehend the idea of satire.

The article features quotes supposedly from producer Leslie Benzies. The statements focus on the open-world realism elements of the game, and they do have a foundation in fact—GTA 5 is supposed to be the most realistic and customizable game to date which will allow you to develop your character in new ways.  It is increasingly the trend with GTA and other games to be able to interact with all game elements.  Since a gym was prominently featured in the trailer, many gamers and analysts have drawn the conclusion that they will be able to work out at the gym to develop their character’s physique.

The joke article starts out along this track with comments like, “It’s not just a matter of going to the gym, doing some button-mashing to lift some weights, and getting stronger. You’ve got to exercise all the major muscle groups- quads, lats, abdominals, everything- as well as aerobic exercise to maintain cardiovascular health.”  This then progresses into, “Other physical attributes of the main character will also play an important role during gameplay, requiring players to carefully monitor and manage things like their current bowel and bladder capacity, blood sugar, hair length, body odor, breath odor, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, beard length, sperm count, sun exposure and sunscreen SPF ….”

How could anyone actually take this seriously?  We all know we play computer games so we don’t have to think about nonsense like our bowel and bladder capacity or our sunscreen SPF.  Rockstar may be setting out to make the most realistic game they can, but they’re also doing it within the constraints of necessary escapism.  No one had anything to worry about here: your character will be customizable, but you won’t be responsible for making sure your character’s blood pressure is stable.  I mean, let’s face it—most of the high octane action that GTA 5 characters undergo could give anyone a heart attack.  With that in mind, you can basically guarantee there is going to be a limit to this realism.  So, internet people—stop being ridiculous.  Laugh at the article; it’s good satire—just like the GTA franchise itself is.

Why GTA 5 Is Probably Coming Out This Year

Right now there’s a lot of debate between industry analysts and fans about whether Grand Theft Auto 5 will come out this year or next.  Rockstar Games has made minimal comment on the issue, although they did state during a recent investors’ call that they intend to release the game during their current fiscal year.  Since that fiscal year ends in March of 2013, that means we’ll almost certainly be seeing the game either this year or early next year.  The release window isn’t set in stone, though; indeed, Rockstar was hesitant to make any further statement about the release window, only that they planned to release the game before the fiscal year is over.

Some people think that Rockstar will want to wait and release Grand Theft Auto 5 on the new generation of consoles.  The reason this seems unlikely, though, is that we still don’t know when PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 will actually be released on the market.  Both Sony and Microsoft aren’t telling us a whole lot, and they seem to be holding off in favor of developing the 360 and the PS3 a little longer.  Much of the development which we’re seeing in the current console generation will certainly inform the development of the next generation.

Not only would Rockstar have to wait indefinitely to release on the next generation of consoles, but it also would have to wait for sales momentum to pick up on the new consoles before gaining sales momentum with the game.  With such a big title this doesn’t seem too smart.  There’s also no reason for us to believe that Rockstar can’t accomplish everything they need to with Grand Theft Auto 5 using the existing console technology.  We’ve already seen great work from Rockstar the past couple of years which demonstrates how far they’ve come with graphics and game performance, and GTA 5 will be no exception, even if it is on the current generation consoles.

Max Payne 3 is coming out later this year, so it’s unlikely we’ll see GTA 5 until this winter or next spring.  While Rockstar seems to be implying they may wait until 2013 to release the game, they may well want to harness the winter sales momentum of the holidays.  So there still seems to be a pretty good chance that we’re going to see GTA 5 this year, albeit not until near the year’s end, in all likelihood.

GTA Should Arrive Before March 2013

Take-Two, owner of Rockstar Games, is still holding off on giving us a release window for Grand Theft Auto 5, but they have at least confirmed that they are “making great progress” during their Q3 2012 earnings conference call.  Take-Two does seem to think the game should be released before March of 2013, since that is the end of their next fiscal year and they do expect to release GTA 5 during their current fiscal year.  In spite of this, they say they are still a long way from “determining a window (for) release.”

Most industry analysts predict that Grand Theft Auto will come out during 2012, perhaps around the holiday season.  There are some analysts who doubt this, though, in light of the fact that Max Payne 3 is coming out this year.  Since Max Payne 3 is a huge release for Rockstar, it seems unlikely that they would want to overlap the releases and detract attention from either Max Payne or Grand Theft Auto.  It would make sense for them to space the releases out.  The holiday season may be far enough away from the release of Max Payne, though, and it would be a great opportunity to take advantage of holiday sales.  The drawback of releasing in the spring of the next year would of course be that with the holiday rush over and everyone’s holiday gift money spent, Rockstar would be missing the major sales season.

So from all this, what can we gather?  The most likely release window for Grand Theft Auto is probably either the holiday season this year or spring of next year.  Even though Take-Two isn’t ready to announce that window yet, it seems pretty reasonable to conclude this from everything we know about Rockstar’s game release schedule at this point.

Anticipating the GTA 5 Soundtrack

Needless to say, we think about Grand Theft Auto 5 a lot these days, ever since the first trailer came out for the game.  With so much to anticipate, we usually focus on questions relating to the protagonist of the game, the setting, the plot, and the graphics and gameplay.  One thing which we don’t talk about as much but which is of course worth taking a look at is the soundtrack of GTA 5.  Right now we don’t know anything about it, but we do know that Grand Theft Auto historically has featured great soundtracks, so GTA 5 is bound to be no exception to the rule.

Music publishers are also looking forward to participating with Rockstar Games on the creation of the GTA 5 soundtrack.  As EMI’s VP of music resources stated, “Over the years, the Grand Theft Auto series has provided EMI Music Publishing with a unique opportunity to get sync placements for some hidden gems in our catalogue that otherwise may not have landed in the world of video games.  We look forward to working with Rockstar Games on future versions of this fantastic series and to continuing to deliver value to our songwriters in this regard.”

So far the only song which is associated with GTA 5 is “Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake” by The Small Faces.  That is the song which we heard in the trailer that came out recently.  Fans argue about which Grand Theft Auto soundtrack has been the best so far—a lot of people vote for San Andreas, but many others contend that Vice City featured the best and most atmospheric soundtrack.

One unique idea which some fans have put forth for music in GTA 5 is a way to customize what the player listens to as he or she moves around in the game.  If for example the playable characters were able to carry around iPods or similar, then those characters could listen to music as they moved around the game, and the player could choose which music they listened to.  The player could include music featured elsewhere in the game, or even music featured in past GTA games.  There’d have to be a limited selection, of course, but it would still provide an interesting way of integrating music into the game.  A feature like this would be just one more way of customizing the gamer’s experience in GTA 5.

Take-Two Still Relatively Silent About GTA 5

Take-Two’s most recent fiscal year wasn’t as impressive as the year before; nothing which Take-Two released last year had nearly the impact as Red Dead Redemption released back in 2010.  Take-Two certainly will want to press forward in 2012 and redeem their bottom line; and one of the best games they can use to push forward is Grand Theft Auto 5.

In spite of this, Take-Two still has fairly little to say about GTA 5, except that they are hard at work on the title and that it is coming along well.  If GTA 5 is released in 2012, this could be one of the best fiscal years for the company; at least, we can certainly glean this not only from the obvious significance of the franchise, but also from the fact that Take-Two has brought up GTA 5’s development during investor meetings.  Take-Two knows their investors care about Grand Theft Auto 5, since their investors realize its financial importance.

Alas, we wish that Take-Two would also spend some time telling the general public about the new game, instead of leaving us to skim through investor’s meeting reports in order to look for news on its development.  Perhaps this is one way Take-Two is trying to build up anticipation for the game—by releasing the trailer to pique our curiosity, and then telling us as little as possible about the game.  Is it working?  We suppose it is—it’s not like we aren’t dying to hear more about the game.  If Take-Two would tell us more about GTA 5, though, it’s not there’d be less news about GTA 5—there’d be more news.  So we hope that one of these days soon we’ll get another glimpse at the game, perhaps through a second trailer.  Some info on the release date would be great, too!

Should GTA 5 Release On Next Gen Consoles?

So far we don’t know a whole lot about Grand Theft Auto 5.  We’ve seen the trailer, but we have yet to hear Rockstar announce an official release date—or even an approximation.  We do have some hints from various sources which we can use to form a hypothesis, but no more than that.  We are pretty sure though that Rockstar plans to release GTA 5 on the current generation of consoles—PS3 and Xbox 360.  While we’re glad that Rockstar might release the game sooner rather than later, we could see the value in waiting.

According to Take-Two’s second quarter financial earnings report, many of Take-Two’s new games may come out during “fiscal year 2013.”  The report didn’t mention anything specific about GTA 5 though.  All the entry for GTA 5 said next to it was “TBA.”  Meanwhile, according to a National Alliance Capital Markets analyst, “Rockstar Games is modeling a four to six month marketing window for their upcoming GTA 5 release, suggesting a summer ’12 launch period.’”  The analyst did say that this was only conjecture and that they didn’t know for sure.

The last time Rockstar released a game at the end of a console cycle was Grand Theft Auto San Andreas.  Considering what a fantastic game that was, Rockstar certainly proved that they have what it takes to make the best of the end of a console cycle.  Historically speaking some games released by other developers have spanned two console generations.  Perhaps GTA 5 will be one of those games, and it will bridge the release of the consoles and be playable on either generation.

It would certainly be exciting if GTA 5 was released for the new generation of consoles with enhanced graphics and ambitious game mechanics.  With so much anticipation surrounding the release of PS4 and Xbox 720, Rockstar would do well to take advantage of the momentum.  On the other hand, Sony and Microsoft are swift to remind us time and again that PS3 and Xbox 360 still have a lot of life left in them, so realistically speaking, Rockstar is most likely to try and take advantage of that life instead of wait to release their game indefinitely.  And let’s be honest; we don’t want to wait indefinitely either, do we?  Whatever Rockstar decides to do, we’re looking forward to another outstanding GTA title with more to offer than ever.

Which GTA Characters Could Come Back in GTA 5?

Ever since the first Grand Theft Auto 5 trailer was released, there has been a lot of speculation regarding the characters.  Right now we don’t know a lot about them, but we’ve identified a probable protagonist, and the rumor is that we’ll have several playable characters, all of whom may be brothers in the story.  One question which a lot of fans have been asking though is whether it might be possible for favorite characters from earlier in the series to return in a cameo in the new game.

Technically, GTA 5 is supposedly set in a different universe than previous installments.  The latest rumor though is that characters from Liberty City might make an appearance in the newest game.  While this is pure speculation, it is based on their appearance in earlier installments, in particular Grand Theft Auto 4.  Since many of those Liberty City characters died, it doesn’t seem likely we could see them again, but some characters which fans think may make a comeback include Niko Bellic, Jonathan “Johnny” Klebitz, and Jerry Kapowitz.

How soon will we find out whether these rumors could be true?  Unfortunately with the recent announcement about the Max Payne 3 release date being in May, we now figure we have quite a while to wait before Grand Theft Auto 5 is released.  Max Payne is a major release for Rockstar Games, so it makes sense that they would want to give it some space before releasing another huge game like GTA 5.

We probably won’t see the game until 2013—then again, with the holiday season, who knows?  Releasing a game in spring oftentimes means missing the holiday rushing and putting out a game when everyone is still distracted with the games they bought the last winter.  So perhaps we’ll still see GTA 5 before the year’s end.  Either way, we have more than enough time to keep speculating and trying to figure out which characters we’ll see.  Hopefully Rockstar won’t leave us completely in the dark and will make another announcement about GTA 5 and its characters—new and old—soon!
